Trafalgar Square is a public square in central London, in the City of Westminster. It was named in honour of the Battle of Trafalgar, which took place on 21 October 1805. The square is one of the city’s best-known landmarks and a major public gathering place.

The square was redeveloped in the early nineteenth century on the site of the former King’s Mews. John Nash began the redesign in 1812, and the area was later named Trafalgar Square in 1830. It opened to the public in 1844 and quickly became a civic centre of London.
