This architectural landmark is located in the Vatican, in front of St. Peter’s Basilica, and was created in the seventeenth century by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Its main feature is its elliptical shape, which visually seems to embrace the square and makes the space both solemn and open at the same time.

History of creation

The colonnade was built between 1656 and 1667 by order of Pope Alexander  VII. The design features 284 Doric columns arranged in four rows, and the composition is completed by 140 statues of saints.
