American higher education is very diverse.There are big public universities and small private colleges.Many students go to college far from their hometown. The application process is complex and looks at grades, tests, and activities. Most students live on campus in dormitories for the first year.Campus life is a big part of the experience.There are many clubs, sports teams, and social events.The first two years are general education.You take classes in many different fields like history, math, and science. Public universities have the same low tuition everywhere.Students often stay in their own region to study.The application system is more centralized and academic.Most students do not live on campus but in private apartments.The program is very specialized from the beginning. You choose your subject, like law or biology, on the first day. There are very few general education classes.The courses are mostly lectures with many students.The final exam at the end of the year is the most important grade.If you fail, you often must repeat the whole year. A bachelor's degree takes only three years.
