Irish roots
Halloween originated in Ireland more than two thousand years ago and is associated with the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain, which was celebrated on October 31 as the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. On this day, according to the beliefs of the Celts, the boundary between the world of the living and the dead became thin, so people lit big bonfires and put on masks and costumes to scare away evil spirits. It was from these customs that many modern traditions of the holiday grew up.

Samhain Holiday
Samhain was one of the most important festivals of the Celts in ancient Ireland. During it, feasts, lights and rituals related to the memory of ancestors and the change of season were organised. Sources note that it was the Irish tradition of Samhain that became the basis for the future of Halloween.

Relocation of traditions
In the 19th century, Irish settlers brought their autumn customs to North America, especially during the Great Famine in Ireland. There, the holiday gradually changed and became more vivid and massive, and then spread all over the world. So the ancient Irish custom turned into a modern Halloween with pumpkins, costumes and treats.

Symbols of the holiday
One of the most famous traditions, the lantern pumpkin, also has Irish roots, although at first people carved not pumpkins, but turnips. In Irish legends there was an image of Jack with a lantern, which explained the meaning of such a lamp as a Defence against dark forces. Today, this symbol has become one of the main signs of Halloween in many countries.
