**Appearance**
The proboscis monkey is a member of the Old World monkey family. It is easy to recognize by the huge, pendulous nose of the male.
Males can reach 66–75 centimetres in body length, while females are usually noticeably smaller. Their tails are almost as long as their bodies and help them keep their balance in the trees. Their fur is reddish-brown, grey and cream. An adult male can weigh about 16–22 kilograms.

**Where it lives**
The proboscis monkey is found only on the island of Borneo, which is shared by Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia. Its main habitats include coastal forests, mangroves and river valleys. This limited range makes the species especially vulnerable to deforestation and changes to coastal ecosystems.

**Species**
There is only one living species of proboscis monkey: *Nasalis larvatus*. It is also known as the long-nosed monkey. It should not be confused with other Bornean monkeys, such as the silvered langur or the macaque.

**Special features and behaviour**
Proboscis monkeys are excellent swimmers. They have webbing between their fingers and toes, which helps them move through the water. When they sense danger, they may jump from trees into a river.
They eat young leaves, fruit, seeds and flowers. They live in groups and communicate using loud calls, facial expressions and body movements. A male’s large nose does more than give him an unusual appearance: it may also help him produce deeper, louder calls. Scientists believe these calls help attract females and warn off rivals. This is one reason why the proboscis monkey is one of Asia’s most recognisable primates.

**Conservation**
The proboscis monkey is considered rare because it lives in only one region of the world and depends on healthy forests and mangroves. Its main threats include deforestation, the drainage of wetlands and the development of coastal areas.
The proboscis monkey is listed as **Endangered** on the IUCN Red List. Its population is declining because of forest and mangrove loss, pollution, fires, hunting, and the development of farms and plantations. It is **endemic to Borneo**, which means that it naturally lives nowhere else in the world. It is also listed in **CITES Appendix I**, which provides the highest level of protection from international trade.

**Conclusion**
The proboscis monkey is a unique primate from Borneo, with an unusual appearance, a limited range and a highly specialised way of life. Its large nose, tree-dwelling lifestyle and plant-based diet make it easy to distinguish from other primates. However, its limited distribution also makes the proboscis monkey especially dependent on the protection of forests and coastal ecosystems.
